SCYD Passes Resolution Calling for the Resignation or Committee Assignment Removal of Representative Robert Sutherland
Resolution Calling for the Resignation or Removal of Committee Assignments for Representative Robert Sutherland
WHEREAS political violence is on the rise, as evidenced by the storming of the US Capitol, the attempted kidnapping of the Governor of Michigan, and the fire set at the Spokane County Democrats Headquarters;
WHEREAS Robert Sutherland was previously rebuked by the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs for saying “Governor, you send men with guns after us when we go fishing, we’ll see what a revolution looks like” and “You send your goons with guns, we will defend ourselves,”;
WHEREAS Robert Sutherland has continued to make violent speech, telling his followers on Facebook to “prepare for war” and suggesting that a ‘coup’ against the sitting President could be the start of a second civil war;
WHEREAS Robert Sutherland suggested that it would be “righteous” if Donald Trump were to use the US military to hold onto the presidency by force;
WHEREAS Robert Sutherland encouraged his constituents and followers to join him in conducting a war to keep Donald Trump in office, stating, “What good and decent person would not conduct a war to defend Life, Liberty, the Pursuit of happiness, their families, their neighbors?” and “This is about America. It’s being destroyed by evildoers. Patriots, will you join with me? I need to know. Lets raise the banner.”;
WHEREAS Robert Sutherland attended a rally with a gun after believing an online hoax that antifa was planning to attack the town of Snohomish, and stood with other armed vigilantes including people who were holding a confederate flag and alleged members of the Proud Boys;
WHEREAS former Representative and alleged domestic terrorist Matt Shea was stripped from his committee assignments and expelled from the GOP caucus after making similar disturbing and dangerous rhetoric;
WHEREAS Republican leadership in the county and state and the other elected officials from the 39th District, Rep. Carolyn Eslick and Sen. Keith Wagoner, have not made any statements regarding their colleague’s disturbing rhetoric;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Snohomish County Young Democrats call for Robert Sutherland to resign his position as State Representative for the 39th District; and
THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Snohomish County Young Democrats call for elected Republicans to immediately condemn Rep. Sutherland’s actions; and
THEREFORE BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Snohomish County Young Democrats call for House Republican leader J.T. Wilcox to immediately suspend Representative Sutherland from his committee assignments.
